Mozart Open House, January 19, 2002

Far in advance, this open house day was promoted all across Hamburg and northern Germany. Even on the radio we heard promotional clips for this event, so we were expecting a pretty big crowd at the theatre. There was a big traffic jam on the street heading towards the theatre. Wondering if it was caused by the crowds at the theatre, we felt relieved to find out that it was just the result of construction.

Along with lots of other visitors, we climbed the big stairway up to the the theatre foyer. To get a better sense of everything, we took a tour around all the floors, where we saw a market place for all kinds of musical souvenirs could be purchased. We also took part in a lottery for a black Ford KA with the Mozart Logo. After we found the starting point of the backstage tour, we finally reached the centre of interest, where Ethan was already signing autographs along with Nannerl, Martha Helmin.

For the first time ever the Mozart performers had the chance to write their names on the brand new Mozart autographcards. The crowd was pushing us and all the others in front of that autograph table and we were barely able to remain standing on our own feet. The Mozart staff were very busy to keep everything under control. After Ethan and Martha, Angelika Milster, Maricel, Felix Martin, Yngve Gasoy Romdal and Fritz Schmid took their places at the table and gave 100 autographs and more. None of them got nervous when they faced that crowd and Felix Martin even tried to split the masses up when he left his place to continue signing autographs in the middle of the foyer. However, some of the fans waited unsuccessfully for hours and were deeply dissapointed.

By chance we found out that there was also a special effect show with a performance of the Mozart cast in the end. This part of the day was very popular and well visited. Two very cool members of the backstage staff explained all about the settings, the costumes and the stage. They showed some stage and light effect along with the "Mission Impossible" soundtrack.

But the Highlight was the appearance of the cast with Arco, Leopold, Colloredo and Wolfgang. They presented the third scene from the musical "Wo bleibt Mozart". The audience was very enthusiastic about that performance and honored it with big applause. It made everyone hungry for more, and I guess some visitors decided to come back soon to see the whole show.

Finally Angelika Milster presented the winner of the car. Now a happy lady from Hamburg is driving the only official Mozart car.

At the end of the day we can say that it would have been nice to have a few less visitors, but overall the open house day was a big success and a good promotion for MOZART - THE MUSICAL !
